Computer & Internet Policy

ELIGIBILITY

Any patron walking into TDL has the right to use our public access computers. This right may be revoked if evidence of abuse to the computers or computer policies is reported. Food and beverages are not allowed at the computer stations.

Minors must have valid library card to have access to the Internet.

Every patron may use the computer for one half hour a day at TDL. In the event that another patron is waiting for the computer, time may be limited to 30 minute sessions.  Additional time may be granted for non-leisure activities such as patrons working on school, professional, online forms, resume, research, etc.

Consistent with the Library Privacy Act, MCL 397.601 et seq. (“Privacy Act”), TDL reserves the right to record and monitor all access and use of Electronic Resources. By accessing and using Electronic Resources, and as a condition of such use, TDL employees and patrons consent to TDL’s monitoring.

INTERNET

As the Internet provides numerous opportunities for research, education, and entertainment TDL endeavors to provide these opportunities to all its patrons while abiding by Federal and State laws.

Filtering software as mandated by the Federal Children’s Internet Protection Act (FCIPA) cover all public access computers with Internet connections. Filters cannot be taken off for any computer being used by a minor even if a parent is present in accordance with the FCIPA. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for their minor child’s reading, listening, and viewing of Library material, including the Internet.

Due to the open format of the public access computers, patrons are asked to be aware of the content they are viewing and of the potential for any child, teen, or adult to also see images on the computer screen. TDL does not support censorship of information but believes there is Internet content that is better viewed in a private controlled environment rather than in an open public area.

SAVING AND PRINTING

A patron may print information from their personal device or public access computers for an administrative fee (see appendix A). Information that can be saved to a disk, flash drive, or cloud based storage are allowed but programs or files that require hard drive space are prohibited.

LAPTOP POLICY

TDL shall offer adult library patrons (18 & older) the ability to check out a library laptop computer. Patron must have a valid fine free Lakeland Library System library card. Patron must also have a current Driver’s License or Michigan ID to leave at the Circulation Desk while using the computer, which shall be returned upon the computer’s check-in.

TDL Laptops cannot leave TDL and must not be left unsupervised. Any damage or loss to the computer either physically or electronically shall be the responsibility of the patron. Laptops can be checked out for a 2-hour loan period and all TDL Computer & Internet policies still apply.
